Unit 10 - Work Experience

For my work experience project, I have applied for a work placement at Radio Harrow which is located at the Northwick Park Hospital. I have been accepted and is currently working as a volunteer there. I have to go to the studio every Wednesday at 19:45 to plan for the 'Harrow Today: Wednesday' . My role at the place is to be a radio presenter. I have applied at this place along with Frankie because feel more comfortable to do the show with someone I know and would feel more at ease to have a discussion with the rest of the team with them around.

I have done a ‘Skills Audit’ to find out my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to working. This sheet can help me find the perfect placement for my work experience. When I have found my placement at Radio Harrow, I have found out that Radio is a great work placement for me because it allows me to show off my strengths and work on my weaknesses. For example, I can show off my great team working skills and creativity, while developing my communication skills and my confidence.

At Radio Harrow, we have a group chat on Whatsapp. It is a place where we pitch in ideas on what talk topics we should discuss about next week's show and any games anyone would like to host. This is also a place where we can share our opinions in a light hearted way but also with respect as  it is still a 'work place chatroom'.

Radio Harrow: Harrow Today 16/11/2022

During this week's show, I was on the talk show throughout the whole night. I tried my best to try and engage into the conversation as much as I can but feel like I could have talked more. I think it's because I was feeling very nervous that day and it was the first time I ever do the show without Frankie, who is a friend that I feel more comfortable around. However, I feel like this was a good opportunity for me to develop my confidence and have a go at attending the show on my own.

Radio Harrow: Harrow Today (23/11/2022)

During this week show, I was not not on the talk show throughout the whole but when I am on, I try to engage with the conversation or game as much as I could and I think it was quite successful. I was feeling very confident that day and was comfortable enough to engage with the show more casually. It was also my first time doing the show's intro so I was a bit nervous and that's why I think I talked a little too fast but I am eager to improve on that next week. I was also given feedback after the intro from our Studio Manager, Hannah, and she said that I shouldn't stick to the script too much when doing the intro and that to take my time to make it sound more natural.

Radio Show Research

I have chosen to analyse the show 'Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp'. This show is on Capital FM every week day from 6am - 10am and it's normally a radio show where they talk about the latest music artists news and the atmosphere during the show is more on the light hearted and fun side. The show also consists a game segment where they play a game together and also get the audience involved sometimes by calling them and let them complete the challenge with them.

I can see that the show could appeal to the audience who wakes up early in the morning to go to work or school and the light hearted and hilarious show would be the perfect thing to get the audience in a good mood for the morning and energised for the rest of the day. The audience could be a working adult or young people starting from the age of 15 as some content may not be suitable or appealing to younger audiences.
What's Possible Group

On the 23 of November, I have gone to a trip with the college at the What's Possible Group HQ in London. The What's Possible group is an advertising agency where there make adverts for their client by researching on their desired target audience, have a discussion about the brief with their client and plan and produce a final product with their team.

I find the day quite useful for me because I was considering doing advertisement in the future if I am not successful in the TV and Film industry. But even if I am successful in my career choice, it is useful to know at least the foundation of how an advert is made and the amount research work that goes into it while making it unique in your own style.
